Canadamania is running wild on The Blue Mountains council.
At its meeting on March 24, a patriotic wave swept over council with the unanimous approval of a resolution to begin playing the Canadian national anthem before every regular council meeting.
Coun. Alex Maxwell introduced the resolution that directed staff to immediately take steps to have Oh Canada played at the start of every council meeting.
The resolution arrived in the wake of continued threats by the United States government against Canada’s economy and sovereignty.
Maxwell noted that most local service clubs and other organizations begin their meetings with Oh Canada and he felt council should do that same.
“It just seems like the right thing to do these days,” said Maxwell.
The resolution received full support from all members of council. Deputy Mayor Peter Bordignon said Grey County council starts its meetings with Oh Canada and he said it creates “a sense of pride” at the meetings.
Bordignon noted that for the national anthem, the county plays a video before its meetings. The video includes Oh Canada, as well as scenes from various locations around the county.
The deputy mayor suggested town staff look into creating a similar video for The Blue Mountains.
Clerk Corrina Giles said staff would have a recording of Oh Canada ready for council’s next regular meeting on April 22. She noted that getting a video together would take a little more time.
The resolution called for the national anthem to be played before every regular council meeting. It did not include special meetings or committee of the whole meetings.
