Grey Highlands is working on a plan to upgrade Alice Street in Flesherton.

Grey Highlands council has received some good news about a major road reconstruction project.

At its meeting on April 17, Grey Highlands accepted the tender for the Alice Street reconstruction project in Flesherton. The bid for the work came in significantly under budget.

Council awarded the work to MacDonnell Excavating Ltd. for a total cost of $1,120,010.90. not including HST (the total cost includes the engineering work for the project).

The municipality’s budget for the work was $1,670,769. Grey Highlands received seven bids for the road construction portion work with prices ranging from $925,520.90 (the bid accepted by the municipality) to $1,244,714.

“The bid came in under budget, which is good,” commented Coun. Dan Wickens.

As a result of the solid bid price for the work, Grey Highlands staff were able to add a ten per cent contingency fund to the total project to deal with any unforeseen issues that might arise during the work.

Wickens said at some point in the near future the municipality will hold a public information meeting at the Flesherton Kinplex to detail the scope of the coming work on the project.

The project includes:

  • An improved street alignment
  • A consistent street width of 6.5 metres
  • Curbs, gutters and sidewalks being added
  • Significant upgrades to underground stormwater infrastructure, which includes an oil grit separator
  • As part of the work, a hydro pole on the street will have to be relocated

Grey Highlands plans to pay for the project using a long-term debt debenture.
