A new gondola attraction is being planned at the Village at Blue.

Blue Mountain Resort is planning to build a brand new gondola attraction.

The gondola plan was unveiled for The Blue Mountains council at its meeting on Nov. 20. Dan Skelton, resort president and chief operating officer, appeared as a delegation to provide information about the plans for the major new attraction.

“This is a big expansion,” Skelton said.

The project would see a new gondola base and lodge constructed at the Plunge parking lot. The ride would take resort visitors to the top and bottom of the mountain throughout the year. The lodge would include commercial components like food and beverage and retail operations. New guest washrooms are also part of the plan.

“It will be a beautiful bookend to the Village,” Skelton said.

The resort does run an open-air gondola using one of its ski hill chair lifts in the summer when there's no snow for skiing.

Skelton said the new gondola would be similar to the existing Silver Bullet attraction, which will have to be taken out of service for an entire summer for upgrades.

The project is currently working its way through the approvals process with the Niagara Escarpment Commission and Skelton said they hope for construction to begin next summer.
