Grey Highlands council has approved a change that will allow a second grave marker on cemetery plots in the community.
At its meeting on March 7, council approved a change to the municipality’s cemetery bylaw that will allow a grave plot to have both an upright and flat marker. The current bylaw permits only one monument or flat marker at the head of a grave.
In a report to council, staff said the municipality has been seeing increasing requests from the public to allow more than one grave marker per plot.
“With an increasing number of interment rights holders requesting to place both an upright and a flat marker on each grave, it has become evident that the existing regulations need adjustment to accommodate these requests,” said Bobbi Scully, municipal services assistant.
The change to the cemetery bylaw will allow a flat marker 18 by 24 inches, flush to the ground in front of an upright monument.
Members of council unanimously supported the change.
“This is something that is definitely a need,” said Mayor Paul McQueen.
