Grey Highlands council is planning to purchase a small piece of Lake Eugenia waterfront property.
At its meeting on Nov. 1, council passed a resolution to direct staff to enter into a purchase and sale agreement with Ontario Power Generation (OPG) that is conditional on council’s approval at an upcoming open session of council.
Council met in closed session on the topic shortly before passing the resolution.
The land in question is a small piece of property owned by OPG on Point Road. For many years it was leased by the municipality as a public access to the waterfront.
In recent years, the municipality’s lease on the property ended and OPG had applied to the committee of adjustment to sever the property in order to sell it to a neighbouring property owner. However, the committee rejected that application.
In October, council had directed staff to negotiate with OPG to purchase the property.
Earlier this year after significant concerns were raised by the public, Grey Highlands had expressed interest in purchasing two OPG properties once leased by the municipality and used as public access points to the lake - the Point Road property and another on Sideroad 30. However, the committee of adjustment approved OPG’s application to sever the property on Sideroad 30 into two lots to be sold to neighbours.
The resolution to enter a sale agreement passed in a 6-1 vote, with only Coun. Dan Wickens opposed. There was no discussion on the matter during the open session of the meeting.
