The Markdale Women’s Curling club recently raised more than $3,000 for the Women’s Centre Grey Bruce during the inaugural Ruby Jubilee Ladies Bonspiel held on Saturday, Nov. 23, 2024.
The cheque was presented by Bonspiel co-chair Heather Reed to the Centre’s Stacey Barry, Fund Development and Communications Manager on Monday, November 25, which coincides with the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.
Funds contributed to the centre were raised through a silent auction and a raffle comprising donations from 35 local businesses and eight individual contributors.
The Ruby Jubilee Bonspiel celebrated 80 years of ladies curling in Markdale and 40 years since the Markdale club has had a ladies league.
Over the course of the day, 64 women on 16 curling teams from Collingwood to Mississauga competed in two draws with two games plus lunch. The team from Stayner won the first draw and the team from Thornhill won the second.
The Bonspiel was co-chaired by Heather Reed, Christine Mongeau and Kathy May.
The Women’s Centre Grey Bruce provides shelter, crisis intervention, safety planning, counselling and transition services for women, children and youth affected by abuse in Grey and Bruce counties.
