A resident in The Blue Mountains is advocating that the town consider an upgraded playground surface as part of planned improvements to a local park.

Debbie Crosskill appeared as a delegation at council’s committee of the whole meeting on July 8 and requested that the town consider a rubberized surface under the new playground equipment planned for Bayview Park in Thornbury.

Crosskill said a rubberized surface would be safer, more accessible and more inclusive for local children. She said a rubberized surface would be much better than gravel or wood chip surfaces.

Bayview Park, on the waterfront in Thornbury, is scheduled for upgrades in 2024 with new playground equipment being part of the project. Crosskill suggested the town look at town reserve funds to pay for the rubberized surface or apply for grants for the project.

“Hopefully there is a reserve somewhere and this money can come together for this to be done properly,” she said. “An accessible playground benefits all children and Bayview is a great place to do it.”

Members of council were generally supportive of the suggestion and passed a resolution asking for a staff report to get further information on the possibility. The resolution also asked for an update from staff on the status of the upgrade project.

“I’m in total agreement,” said Coun. Gail Ardiel. “We have to be inclusive. We need to look at this.”
