The Town of the Blue Mountains has awarded the engineering contract for the Lakewood Drive Reconstruction Project to Tatham Engineering Limited.
Lakewood Drive has been scheduled for reconstruction due to deficiencies with the water distribution and sanitary sewage collection system. The road was built in 1971 and the underground infrastructure now needs to be replaced.
Council approved the project as part of the 2022 budget. The detailed design phase will begin later this year, with construction anticipated to start sometime in 2023.
The road will be reconstructed to generally match existing conditions, and the ditches will be cleared of trees and reshaped to improve drainage. A stormwater study will also be completed to consider storm drainage deficiencies, and will recommend work on private lands to be completed by the landowners to reduce the risk of flooding by conveying stormwater to Georgian Bay.
As part of the project, the town will be looking at the possibility of closing the west intersection of Lakewood Drive and Highway 26 and installing traffic lights at the intersection of Lakewood Drive, Highway 26 and Grey Road 40.
This was the preliminary preferred option identified through a Municipal Class Environmental Assessment completed in 2014 for the intersection of Highway 26 and Grey Road 40.
