I was shocked to see the proposed tax rate increase for Collingwood for 2025.
The OPP increase came with a bit of sticker shock for all. Given the size of the increase, I think we need to reconsider going forward with both the multi-use centre and the arts facility. These are wants, not needs, and will exponentially raise our taxes into the stratosphere going forward.
Maybe it is time to get real and look at building a downsized centre that contains both facilities on the same property, with shared parking, office areas, and washrooms. It could be built with the potential to expand both at a later date when town finances would permit.
We do not need a “showcase” to draw people to our downtown core. I enjoy our downtown as it is. We have a fabulous arena, many smaller theatre venues, a newer library and a beautiful, walkable downtown. Let’s build as we can afford to, not because some desire everything now.
