As public access to Georgian Bay continues to be obscured by private development, it is crucial that Collingwood town council make a concerted effort to protect public lands.

At the recent presentation about redevelopment of the public lands surrounding Collingwood’s iconic Terminals, it was evident that the plan was contingent on a proposed hotel and 24-storey condo tower.

The Town of Collingwood seems all too willing to sacrifice public lands to accommodate private interests and fails to recognize that these lands exist for those in this community.

We do not want to feel like tourists in our own town, and our shoreline cannot be reduced to a playground, or roadways and parking lots for guests. Public lands are for the community — to be shared with others, but more importantly, a place where people can freely go to enjoy the sanctity of the waterfront.
