The obstetrics unit at Collingwood's hospital is closed today.

The rare move was announced by the hospital on social media this morning.

"Collingwood General and Marine Hospital (CGMH) has temporarily closed its Obstetrics Unit on Monday, June 10 due to unexpected nursing staffing challenges," states the announcement, noting the unit is expected to reopen today at 7 p.m.

The unit will be closed to all new admissions, but patients experiencing pregnancy emergencies will still be able to go to the hospital for care.

The hospital will guide patients who call in to other available obsetrics units, and will assess patients who come in for transfer where it is safe and appropriate.

"CGMH has communicated with all its hospital partners to ensure support is in place and has contacted OB patients that may be impacted by this closure," states the announcement.

More to come.
