Annual run will be handed over to new organizers next year; ‘It filled my bucket to do it,’ says current organizer

This is the last year Sarah Applegarth will be organizing Collingwood’s Terry Fox Run, and she’s hoping to go out with a bang.

Applegarth said the goal for the Sept. 15 event is to reach $20,000 in donations. She also wants to see at least 300 participants come out.

“I think we’ve been doing it for about eight years now. We have a new committee coming to help out and learn the ropes this year,” she said. “It filled my bucket to do it. It will be left in some really great hands.”

The Terry Fox Run is an annual charity event that supports the Terry Fox Foundation in memory of the famous Canadian who set out to run coast to coast following a cancer diagnosis that took his leg. Fox died before he could finish the run, but his efforts and story have inspired millions of others to raise money, run, and donate toward cancer research.

“Everybody is familiar with Terry Fox and what he means to the country, but the reason I got involved is because they have the most money going toward the cause,” she said.

The Collingwood event takes place at Harbourview Park starting near the Awen’ Waterplay, where participants can run, walk, jog, or stroll a 2.5-kilometre loop.

“The big strides we’ve made when it comes to cancer are a big deal to me,” said Applegarth. “Most of us have been touched by cancer in one way or another.”

Registration begins at 9 a.m., with a keynote speaker and group warm-up at 9:45 a.m. The run/walk starts at 10 a.m. Donations will be accepted by cash or cheque on site as well as by credit card in advance on the website.
