For first time in 15 years, watch a championship rugby game in Collingwood

The Collingwood Collegiate Institute junior boys rugby team faces Bear Creek for the GBSSA title at Harbourview Park on Friday.

This Friday the community is invited to watch Collingwood Collegiate Institute’s (CCI) rugby team battle for the regional title and a chance at provincials in a match at Harbourview Park.

Yesterday, the CCI junior boys rugby team defeated Banting Memorial High School 40-17 and Barrie North High School 20 - 12 to qualify for the Georgian Bay Secondary School Association championships.
The wins also mean CCI will be hosting the championship game for the first time in almost 15 years, according to Todd Hammond, one of the coaches for the junior boys' rugby team.

The game will take place at Harbourveiw Park at 1 p.m. this Friday, May 31. The CCI team will take on Bear Creek, and the winner will go on to the Barbarian Cup provincial championships in Fergus on June 9 and 10.

According to Hammond the junior boys' rugby team is now 9-1 for the season with one loss to Barrie North earlier this year now being avenged with the semi-final win yesterday (May 27).

Hammond reports the team was led by two second-half tries from Luke Cameron and one by Reilly Kirk as the team rallied from a 12-3 second-half deficit for the win. Kade Rennie added the final 5 points with a conversion and a penalty kick.

The public is welcome to attend the Friday game to cheer on Collingwood’s junior rugby team.
