How you can support lifelong learning for young adults with special needs

Visiting the Coffee Nook, volunteering or donating to Events for Live Centre helps to sustain vital local programming

Events for Life Centre, located near Thornbury, began as a summer program over a decade ago and has grown every year since.

The organization works with individuals 21 years old and over who have special needs by providing educational, social and recreational day programs geared toward lifelong learning.

By sharing these services, the centre helps prepare participants for living independently and working in the community.

“I’m so honoured to be a part of this amazing organization and community that brings joy and purpose into the lives of those that need it the most,” shared Barb Weeden Executive Director for Events For Life.

Events for Life provides programs Monday through Thursday and include swimming, dance, music therapy, pickleball, Zumba and yoga.

“Our participants also operate a Coffee Nook that is open to the public, where they learn life skills such as menu planning, baking, customer service and basic banking, among others,” shared Weeden.

Organized activities outside of the program day are Super Socials, these include dances, movie nights, sporting events and theatre productions.

"It’s where I feel safe and like my second home," shared program participant Allie. "I love being with my friends and we get to do so much," added fellow participant Samantha.

In order to keep these programs running Events For Life is always in need of volunteers to assist the individuals and facilitate workshops.

“Donations from individuals, businesses and foundations are needed to help us sustain and grow our operation,” expressed Weeden.

Giving Tuesday and their annual Christmas Craft Sale are major fundraisers for the organization, but community support goes a long way all year round.
