Every wintry Saturday and Sunday, dozens of children 4 to 10 gather in the snow at Highlands Nordic, 15 minutes south of Collingwood just west of Duntroon. They’re eager to split into their age groups and ski and play in the weekly 2-hour Jackrabbit Program, specifically designed for the FUNdamentals stage of athletic development.

As children move up through the Jackrabbits levels, they progress from the basics of classic Nordic skiing through to the various techniques of skate skiing. Throughout, the key word is FUN, as skills sessions are interspersed with games (on skis) and longer ‘free ski’ forays. Seasonal highlights include the ‘Winter Olympics’ and a bonfire complete with hot dogs and hot chocolate.

The FUNdamentals set an important foundation for young children. “Nordic skiing gives young people confidence, skills and fitness,” observes Gord Salt, a national-level competition coach and head coach with the Trailblazers. “It’s amazing how it helps with their long-term development. It really sets them up for success in life.”
