Construction on a new crosswalk in Collingwood is slated to begin this summer.

A crosswalk at the Hamilton Drain Trail and Hurontario Street (north of Poplar Sideroad) could be constructed in July and August, according to town staff.

Director of Engineering and Public Works Brian MacDonald said the project is currently out to tender with a closing date of June 27.

If a successful bidder is selected, MacDonald anticipates construction beginning in July with the crosswalk opening in August before the school season starts.

The town did send out information material on the crosswalk to area schools this month, and Councillor Tina Comi used the information to announce the crosswalk at a council meeting on May 27.

Comi said the community has been waiting for a crosswalk there for some time and was very excited to learn it would be installed this summer.

The crosswalk was part of Comi’s election campaign.

St. Mary's Catholic School and Elementary School Catholic Notre-Dame-De-La-Huronie are in the area near where the crosswalk is to be installed.

Staff said there will be more information put out about the crosswalk prior to opening.
