The ground is broken at Fisher Field where crews are working servicing and building a washroom building at the park.
It will be several months before the building is complete, however, as crews also have to install water and a septic system on site.
The town’s director of parks, recreation and culture, Dean Collver, estimates the field house will take about 28 weeks with completion slated for September.
He noted it’s a “small blessing” there will be reduced capacity on the fields this summer to minimize the disruption of the long construction schedule.
According to a report to council in November, the 18 bids that came in response to the tender for the work all estimated over $1 million to build the field house.
What went to tender is a building to house four washrooms, two dressing rooms and a small referee room. The building will not be heated, and so it will be open three out of four seasons. Much of the cost of the facility is tied to linking water and building septic services for the washroom building, according to Collver.
He said if and when wastewater services are extended up Sixth Street, the washroom building could be connected to the town’s wastewater system.
In total, the budget for the building is $1.2 million, which will be paid with a $60,000 donation from the Collingwood United Soccer Club, $1.06 million from the town’s development charges reserve fund, and the remaining $117,000 from the town’s non-development charges reserve fund.
