Next week, members of the Beaver Valley Legion will be unveiling two new monuments at the cenotaph in Jack Acres Memorial Park in Thornbury.

The monuments commemorate all branches of the Canadian Forces, the RCMP, the Coast Guard, the Merchant Marines, the Ontario Provincial Police, firefighters, and paramedics.

The Legion (Branch 281) will be hosting a drumhead service to dedicate the monuments on June 2 at 1:30 p.m.

A drumhead service is traditionally a church service conducted in the field during armed conflict and often near the battlefront. A generic (non-denominational) altar was made from drums and flags draped neatly over them.

MP Terry Dowdall, MPP Brian Saunderson and other dignitaries will be attending, including representatives from each of the organizations commemorated with the new monuments.

All are welcome to attend. The gathering begins at 1:30 p.m. and the service starts at 2 p.m. There will be food and beverages at the Beaver Valley Community Centre following the ceremonies.
