A local non-profit think tank is inviting the public to learn more about an affordable housing action plan the group has put together over the last two years.
During a virtual event tomorrow, Nov. 13 from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m., the Institute of Southern Georgian Bay is launching what it has dubbed the regional community affordable housing action plan.
"More than two years of learning about the complex issue of affordable housing, hosting collaborative events, listening to solution-focussed speakers from across Canada, and much community discussion has resulted in a plan to increase the regional supply of affordable housing," states the news release put out by the Institute.
As part of the online event, members of the institute will go through elements of the plan and there will be a panel of guest speakers, including:
- Liz Buckton, Senior Policy Planner, Grey County
- Claire Dodds, Director of Planning and Development Bruce County
- Kristin Pechkovsky, Planning Program Supervisor – Innovation and Acceleration, Simcoe County
- Carol Merton, Councillor, Owen Sound
- Sylvia Statham, Lutheran Social Services, Owen Sound
- Nola Marion, Engaged Citizen, Township of Southgate
The plan release event is part of the Institute's goal to share what it has learned over the last few years about affordable housing solutions, and to make sure the information is available for the communities and levels of government with the power to implement some of the ideas.
Key components of the plan, according to the Institute's news release, include:
- a regional view to achieve scale
- focused municipal support for affordable development
- supporting “non-market” housing providers
- using new mechanisms such as land trusts and co-ops, and
- increasing access to capital for affordable acquisition of land and buildings.
