Turning 50 might be daunting for some, but for Special Olympics Ontario it’s a time to celebrate! The 2018-2019 season has felt like a year-long party for athletes, volunteers and supporters of the organization.

This past February saw the Blue Mountain alpine ski racing team send twelve athletes to the Provincial Winter Games in Sault Ste Marie. Those athletes returned with many medals across the events. A curling team of four athletes and two coaches also competed at those games, and placed fourth in a deep division. Athletes and their coaches are eager to hear about who may advance to next year’s National Winter Games in Thunder Bay.

Collingwood will be represented by five athletes at June’s Provincial five-pin bowling championships in Oshawa. And, swimmers are looking forward to competing at the end of March in a season-ending qualifying meet that may see them advance to Provincial Spring Games in 2020.

Locally, Collingwood offers several sport programs that meet weekly throughout each sport season. With winter coming to a close, sports like alpine skiing and curling will make way for softball and golf. As a grassroots organization, the success of these athletes could not happen without volunteers.

Coming into the summer season, softball is in critical need of coaches to organize weekly training and seasonal competitions, and may not be able to run without new volunteers. Other sports – such as soccer, track and field or bocce – could also be developed based on the interests of new volunteers.
