The Town of Collingwood estimates it received more than 200 submissions for its Snowplow Naming Contest.

They’ve narrowed the list down to 20 choices, and want to know your top six by Sept. 13.

The shortlist of 20 names are:

  • Norgoma (named after a ship built in Collingwood),
  • Sidelauncher,
  • George (inspired by Georgian Bay),
  • Al Plowcino,
  • Blue (inspired by Blue Mountains),
  • Snow Way Jose,
  • Snow Cruiser,
  • Sir Salts A’Lot,
  • Sled Zeppelin,
  • Darth Blader,
  • The Hat Trick: Plow, Salt, Sand,
  • Blizzard Buster,
  • Admiral Plowington,
  • Austin Plowers,
  • Gordie Plow,
  • Squallingwood,
  • Norisle (named after a ship built in Collingwood)
  • Plowabunga!,
  • Snow Big Deal,
  • Scoop Dogg

Based on how the community votes, the final names for four plows are expected to be announced by the town the week of Sept. 16.

A team of 20 Collingwood staff including operators, patrollers, and a mechanic work to clear six plow routes in Collingwood every winter, with approximately 320 lane kilometers of roads and five sidewalk routes with approximately 85 kilometers of sidewalk.

While naming the snowplows doesn’t directly improve performance, town officials say it boosts spirits during long and dark winter days.
