In 1984 Barbara Weider was one of the founding members of Theatre Collingwood. Thirty-six years later Blue Mountain Resort, the company her family started, is still believing in and supporting Theatre Collingwood. Sadly, Barbara passed away five years ago, but her legacy lives on in the theatre company that she was so passionate about.

“It’s no secret that theatre companies worldwide have been hit hard by the pandemic. The basis of what we do is gather people together. More than ever we need our supporters’ help and Blue Mountain has once again stepped up to the plate”, said Erica Angus, executive director of Theatre Collingwood.

Blue Mountain Resort has made a cash donation of $5,000 to Theatre Collingwood in addition to a $2,500 in-kind donation.

The professional theatre company has not been able to present live shows since March 15, but the company has not spent the last eight months wasting time. Through current government assistance programs and the generosity of its supporters (both individuals and companies), Theatre Collingwood has been able to use the time to rethink how they present entertainment for the “new normal” and has come up with some very creative ideas. They have been reaching out to the community through their newsletter, entitled What’s The Buzz, providing links to great online performances. They also have a strong social media presence and Angus has been collaborating on a bi-weekly Facebook Live show with the Town of Collingwood. In August they held a very successful (and socially-distanced) event at the Georgian Hills Vineyard where 50 guests were entertained by musician Aaron Solomon and painter John Burton, while tasting wine and food pairings.

“Blue Mountain has never stopped believing in what we do and in the power of great storytelling. They also understand the important role that the arts plays in our region in terms of economic development,” said Angus.

Theatre Collingwood is currently working on three on-line shows that they will stream before the end of the year. These are productions that will be professionally filmed to ensure a high-quality standard. First up is a production called The Missing Pages, featuring Tom Allen (musician, CBC Radio host & writer) and such outstanding Canadian talents as Patricia O’Callaghan and Derek Boyes. The story is about Canadian Theodore Molt whose visit with Ludwig van Beethoven was anything but dull! You can purchase the link to this show for just $25 which allows your household to view it from the comfort of your home, Nov.13th-15th on-line. By purchasing a link you will also be supporting Canadian artists during this difficult time for them.
