The Town of Collingwood’s Accessibility Advisory Committee is seeking comments, input, and feedback from the public on the proposed Strategic Multi-Year Accessibility Plan for 2020-2025, in a continuing effort to make Collingwood the most accessible community in Ontario.
This proposed plan describes the goals and key priorities of the Town of Collingwood in maintaining and moving forward with accessibility priorities for municipal facilities and services, with a strong focus on customer service and infrastructure, including public transportation, parks, and trails.
The public is invited to review the proposed Accessibility Plan on Engage Collingwood. Through this portal, the public can share stories about what makes Collingwood accessible, complete a survey about the proposed Accessibility Plan, and learn more about Accessibility in Collingwood. Please submit feedback by Wednesday, Aug. 26, 2020 at 4 p.m. Comments and questions about the proposed Accessibility Plan can also be emailed to [email protected].
The Town of Collingwood’s Strategic Multi-Year Accessibility Plan was developed by the Accessibility Advisory Committee in compliance with the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA), the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, the Canadian Human Rights Act, as well as the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal #11.
The Strategic Multi-Year Accessibility Plan is planned to go before Standing Committee on Sept. 8, 2020 and Council on Sept. 21, 2020.
Collingwood’s Accessibility Advisory Committee
The role of the Accessibility Advisory Committee is to provide advice to the municipal government on a wide range of municipal processes to help make public services and facilities accessible to everyone. Under the AODA, municipal councils in Ontario are empowered to implement accessibility standards in order to achieve accessibility for Ontarians with disabilities with respect to goods, services, facilities, accommodation, employment, buildings, structures and premises on or before Jan. 1, 2025.
The Committee is responsible for advising municipal council on the requirements and implementation of accessibility standards, and the preparation of accessibility reports. The Committee also participates in the review of site plans and drawings (as described in section 41 of the Planning Act when required and performs all other functions that are specified in the regulations.
