Novice driver charged with impaired operation following single-vehicle crash Friday

A Toronto man was charged with impaired driving after crashing into a traffic light in Collingwood on Friday.

Shortly before 11 p.m., police responded to a cellphone crash notification. The single-vehicle collision happened at the intersection of First and Pine streets. The centre traffic light was destroyed, Collingwood and The Blue Mountains OPP said in a news release.

Police said the 33-year-old novice driver had about two-and-a-half times the legal limit of alcohol in his system. He was charged with operation while impaired (alcohol and drugs), operation while impaired (blood-alcohol concentration 80-plus) and being a novice driver with a blood-alcohol concentration above zero.

The driver was issued a 90-day licence suspension and a seven-day vehicle impoundment. He has a Feb. 11 court date in Collingwood.
