A machete-wielding man was arrested and charged on Saturday after city police say he attacked a family in downtown Barrie.
Around 2:20 p.m. on Oct. 12, Barrie police say officers responded to a weapons-related call on Collier Street, just west of Berczy Street.
Upon arrival, officers took a 30-year-old Barrie man into custody after he had been restrained by a family he had allegedly just accosted, according to police.
"It was at this time police leaned that the male had aggressively approached them as they walked eastbound on Collier Street, began to yell at them, and then pulled out a large machete which he swung violently, striking one of the family members," police stated in a news release.
The man was transported to police headquarters on Fairview Road where he was later charged with assault with a weapon and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.
He was held in custody and is scheduled to appear today for a bail hearing at the Barrie courthouse.
None of the family members sustained any serious injuries, according to police.
Police also credited them for restraining the assailant until officers arrived.
