Stolen school bus driver charged with impaired

Investigation revealed bus was damaged by striking a light standard and signage in a roundabout

CLEARVIEW TOWNSHIP - On May 16, 2018 at approximately 8 p.m., members of the Huronia West OPP Detachment responded to a single motor vehicle collision at the Highway 26 and Mosley Street roundabout north of Stayner. 

When officers arrived they observed a full sized yellow school bus with front end damage. The investigation revealed the damage was as a result of striking a light standard and signage in the roundabout.

There were no passengers on the bus at the time of the collision. The driver of the school bus received non-life threatening injuries and treated in hospital. Officers arrested the driver for impaired operation of a motor vehicle. It was also learned the bus had been stolen.   

The accused, 56-year-old Frederick North of Clearview Township, has been charge with:

  • Impaired operation of a motor vehicle contrary to section 253(1)(a) Criminal Code of Canada.
  • Over 80 section 253(1)(b) Criminal Code of Canada.
  • Charge number three: theft over $5000.00 of a motor vehicle section 334(a) of the Criminal Code of Canada.
  • Possession of stolen property over $5000.00 contrary to section 355(a) Criminal Code of Canada.
  • Drive while disqualified section 259(4) Criminal Code of Canada.
  • Careless driving section 130 Highway Traffic Act.
  • Liquor readily available section 32(1) Liquor License Act.
  • Open liquor section 31(2) Liquor License Act.

The accused is to appear in Collingwood Court on June 12, 2018 to answer to the above charges.
