Grey Bruce Ontario Provincial Police have reported a 13-year-old sustained minor injuries when they were struck by a vehicle earlier this month near Markdale while crossing the street to board a school bus.

Police confirmed in a news release that officers were called to Highway 10, north of Markdale, on Oct. 11 at 8:29 a.m. for the incident.

"The investigation revealed that a northbound school bus was stopped with its lights activated and stop sign extended and a southbound vehicle failed to stop and struck a 13-year-old youth who was crossing the street," states the news release.

A 63-year-old from Toronto was charged with failing to stop for a school bus and failing to surrender an insurance card.

Drivers are reminded to slow down when you see a school bus and give it plenty of space, as it could come to a stop at any time.

Remember, failing to stop for a stopped school bus that has its flashing red lights engaged is a serious offence.

For a first-time offence, you can be fined from $400 to $2,000 and have six demerit points added to your license.
