Grey Highlands council has approved the purchase of a new floating platform to be installed at Flesherton Pond.
Council at its meeting on May 17 approved a recommendation by municipal staff to move ahead with the purchase of a floating platform for the popular swimming and fishing location at a cost of $5,484, not including HST.
During the budget process, council approved $10,000 for the project and the Flesherton Beautification and Improvement Committee (FBIC) offered to partner with the municipality and committed an additional $5,000 for the platform.
The platform will be 10-feet-by-10-feet with cedar decking.
Deputy Mayor Aakash Desai indicated a concern that it appeared as if the FBIC was paying for the majority of the project, even though council had set aside $10,000.
“We should use the money for the project we had already budgeted for as a municipality, let’s use the $10,000 first, before using any money committed by the committee,” said Desai.
Director of Economic and Community Development Michele Harris explained that council was approving the purchase of the platform, but not the installation. Staff will be returning to council with a subsequent report regarding installation costs. With the platform being installed on the water, the project will require accessories that include: anchoring, chains, mooring cleats, bumpers and a ladder. The project will also require underwater work.
“There will be some special installation costs,” said Harris.
