Grey County is moving forward with plans to build a new ambulance base in Feversham.
At its meeting on Feb. 27, county council approved a staff report that recommended the county acquire a small piece of property from the Municipality of Grey Highlands that will become the home of the new ambulance base.
The property is located on Grey County Road 2, was once owned by Grey County and still houses a sand and salt dome for winter road maintenance. Several years ago, Grey Highlands bought the property after the county no longer needed the land.
The current plan will see Grey County require 1.26 acres of the property and proceed with the construction of the new ambulance base. The land deal will be done at no cost to the county or Grey Highlands, with all land transfer and survey costs being covered through the approved budget for the ambulance base project. Grey Highlands will continue to own the portion of the property that is home to its sand/salt dome.
“It’s good to see this is moving forward,” said Grey Highlands Mayor Paul McQueen. “This is an under serviced area.”
Deputy CAO Randy Scherzer said when considering potential locations for the new ambulance base, the county prioritized the location being on County Road 2, close to Feversham and close to Grey Road 4. The property checked all three boxes.
Once the land acquisition process is complete and the design work is finished, the project will be sent out for tender. Construction on the new base is expected to begin later in 2025. The total budget for the work is $1.6 million. The county is funding the project through long-term debt.
