The new council for the Town of The Blue Mountains will have the opportunity to consider bringing some form of a committee structure back to the town.
The Blue Mountains Deputy Mayor Peter Bordignon, who has been acclaimed in the election and will be on the new council, brought a motion to council’s Aug. 29 meeting asking for a staff report on the subject.
The town currently does not use a general public committee structure and instead has some committees and task forces working on specific issues.
Bordignon said he thought the new council should have some options to consider going forward.
“I’d like the CAO to bring us a report on what this might look like,” he said.
Coun. Paula Hope immediately asked if the report would include the CAO looking at the Blue Mountains Attainable Housing Corporation (BMAHC), which is a separate corporation from the town, on how its board members were appointed.
CAO Shawn Everitt said he would work with BMAHC Executive Director Jennifer Bisley to include a section in the report about the housing corporation.
“I think it would be a worthwhile exercise,” he said.
Coun. Andrea Matrsovs suggested the report also look at how council appoints members to outside organizations such as the local conservation authorities and the library board.
Everitt said he already has a report in the works that will take a strategic look at how committees would function, how they are different from task forces and what their mandates could be.
“This is absolutely in line with what I had planned with the new council,” he said. “I’m looking forward to being able to bring some additional information and options.”
Council voted 6-0 in favour of the deputy mayor’s resolution on the topic, with Coun. Jim Uram absent.
