With just a few days until nominations close, the race for council seats in the Town of The Blue Mountains and the Municipality of Grey Highlands are getting crowded.
There will be election races for both mayor and deputy mayor in both communities.
In Grey Highlands, it is a three-way race for the mayor’s chair with incumbent Paul McQueen facing challenges from incumbent councillor Danielle Valiquette and newcomer Don Alp.
In The Blue Mountains, incumbent councillor Andrea Matrosovs is seeking the mayor’s position and is being challenged by Elizabeth Marshall. Incumbent Mayor Alar Soever has announced he is not seeking re-election.
In the race for the deputy mayor in Grey Highlands, incumbent councillor Dane Nielsen is being challenged by newcomer Stephen (Steve) Patrick Maloney. Incumbent Deputy Mayor Akash Desai is not seeking relection.
In The Blue Mountains, incumbent Deputy Mayor Peter Bordignon has filed nomination papers to seek reelection. He is being challenged by former councillor Joe Halos.
In Grey Highlands, there are seven candidates for the five councillor’s seats. Incumbents Paul Allen and Tom Allwood are seeking reelection. Former councillor Lynn Silverton is also in the race. They are being challenged by newcomers Gary Franklin, Joe Lougheed, Brian McCulloch and Dan Wickens.
In The Blue Mountains, there are four candidates confirmed for council. Incumbent Paula Hope is running again. She is joined in the race by Shawn McKinlay, June Porter and James (Jim) Ross.
A number of candidates are also running in the local school board election races.
In Grey Highlands and Southgate there is a three-way race for a seat on the Bluewater District School Board. Annie-Ruth Foster, Bryden Jones and Janice Kaikkonen are seeking the spot.
Two candidates are seeking the English Trustee position on the Grey Bruce Catholic District School Board: Jocelin Rivest and Robyn Garvey Wiseman.
Saveria Caruso and Eric Lapointe are running for Conseil Scolaire Viamonde Sector 5 trustee position, which includes Bruce, Grey, Simcoe and Dufferin counties.
In The Blue Mountains, there is a three-way race for English Trustee seat on the Grey Bruce Catholic District School Board. Tammy Willis, Michael Black and Bruce Muise are running for the position.
Incumbent Frances Morgan is running again to represent The Blue Mountains and the Municipality of Meaford on the Bluewater District School Board.
Sylvie C. Barbeau-Chmielewski is the lone candidate in the race for the Conseil scolaire catholique Providence Trustee - French Separate position.
Anybody interested in running in the election has until August 19 to file their nomination papers. The election will be held on October 22, 2022.
