The Blue Mountains council has agreed to waive 2022 court fees for the Nipissing Ridge Tennis Club.
Council made the decision at its committee of the whole meeting on May 31. Director of Community Services Ryan Gibbons explained that the club’s members paid a three-year membership in advance in 2019 and adding the fees for 2022 would cause some financial issues for the club this year.
This year, the town introduced fees for various recreational facilities for groups that are booking specific blocks of times. The fees do not apply to anybody just showing up to play.
Gibbons said over the past 20 years the club has contributed financially to amenities at the Nipissing Ridge tennis courts. He said the fee waiver would cost the town approximately $9,520.
Coun. Paula Hope said she appreciated town staff recognizing and remedying the situation.
“I know (the club members) have been active over many years. It makes sense to have an understanding approach,” said Hope.
Gibbons said there would continue to be ongoing communication between staff and local sports clubs for a better understanding of issues.
“We should look at this revenue loss as a lesson learned,” commented Coun. Rob Sampson.
