The Town of The Blue Mountains has named Brian Harkness Senior of the Year.

At council’s meeting on June 24, the town awarded the annual Ontario Senior of the Year award to long-time community volunteer Brian Harkness.

Mayor Andrea Matrosovs presented the award and Harkness received a hearty round of applause from the large crowd attending the meeting.

Harkness was nominated by the members of the community for the award and approved by council.

“He has contributed much to our community,” said Matrosovs, who added that Harkness was very humble and thankful when she called him about the award. “His first response was: I just do what all volunteers do.”

Harkness has been a member of the Thornbury/Clarksburg Rotary Club for more than a decade and has twice received the Paul Harris Fellowship Award. He also volunteers with the North East Grey Health Clinic, the Meaford Hospital Foundation, the Blue Mountains Ratepayers Association and the Lora Bay Community Association.

“Brian Harkness is a doer,” said Matrosovs.

Harkness thanked the community and his nominators for their support.

“I’d like to thank all the volunteers who helped me get this award,” he said.
