Craigleith Heritage Depot Launches Digital Cultural Map

Press Release - July 4, 2024
Town Hall Update generic

The Craigleith Heritage Depot, the Blue Mountains Public Library, and the Town of The Blue Mountains are excited to announce the launch of an interactive Cultural Map. The map is designed to celebrate the rich heritage and diversity of the community. It is a one-stop resource for residents and visitors to explore the cultural, natural, and intangible heritage that defines the area. Staff have been working closely with the public over the last few months to identify over 75 sites for the July launch.

“We thank the Museum for their leadership in launching this cultural journey. Our Town is rich in cultural and natural heritage, and it is so important to collect and document the traditions and stories that enrich our community far beyond a geographical map,” says Mayor Andrea Matrosovs.

“There’s been a lot of excitement and interest in the project,” says Museum Curator Alessia Farris, “We’re always looking for creative ways to work with the community to preserve and share cultural landmarks, traditions, and stories for future generations, and with the Cultural Map, we’re both collaboratively protecting and making history.”

The Cultural Map goes beyond simply pinpointing locations. It delves into the stories, traditions, and natural wonders that make up the unique identity of the Town of The Blue Mountains, including:

  • Cultural Heritage: Historic sites, buildings, landmarks, and artifacts that are significant to the community.
  • Natural Heritage: Breathtaking landscapes, geological formations, and natural habitats that define the region's beauty.
  • Intangible Heritage: The traditions, folklore, festivals, and social practices passed down through generations that capture the essence of The Blue Mountains’ spirit.

Whether you’re a long-time local or a curious visitor, the Cultural Map offers an engaging way to explore the Town of The Blue Mountains. A physical copy is in development and will launch at a later date. Members of the public are encouraged to continue to contribute and help the map grow and evolve.
