A group of Collingwood residents have joined a nation-wide network of mask makers to make and deliver cloth masks to agencies, facilities, and people who need them. Locally, a sewing shed has been set up to provide makers with materials, and accommodate donated items.
The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit reported today a second staff member at Woods Park Retirement Residence has tested positive for COVID-19. The staff member is one of four cases reported today by the health unit.
No new cases have been reported in Collingwood since April 11. The previously confirmed seven cases (it was eight but someone moved out of the region) have all recovered.
However, Dr. Charles Gardner, medical officer of health for Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit, said a lapse in new reported cases in a community doesn't mean the virus has left the community.
"I would maintain that with surveillance you're getting the tip of the iceberg, you're getting ten per cent or even one per cent of what's happening in the community," said Gardner. "If you're missing most of what's going on in the community, it's less surprising ... you're only going to see the occasional case."
Ontario Public Health reported 640 new cases today, 407 recoveries and 50 more deaths attributed to the virus. There have been 13,519 cases of COVID-19 confirmed in Ontario since the start of the pandemic, and that includes 7,807 recoveries (52.4 per cent) and 763 deaths.
