Public Health Ontario has marked two milestones today with a new record number of daily cases and an all-time high number of active cases.
The province reported 1,589 new cases today, which is one more case than the previous record, which was set on Saturday (Nov. 21) with 1,588 new cases. This is the ninth time this month the province has reported a new daily case count record.
There are 13,004 active, lab-confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the province according to the province's public health agency. This is the first time the number of active cases has reached 13,000.
The province has also confirmed 19 deaths related to COVID-19 today. The deaths include one person between the ages of 20 and 39 years old, one person between the ages of 40 and 59 years old, five people between the ages of 60 and 79 years old, and 12 people over the age of 80. Eleven of the people who died were residents at long-term care homes.
Since yesterday, 42 people have been hospitalized due to the coronavirus, and six people with COVID-19 were admitted to intensive care units.
The province reported 1,484 new recoveries today.
Of the 1,589 new cases reported today, 535 cases were from Peel, 336 were from Toronto, and 205 were from York Region.
The province has reported 60 new school-related cases today, 51 of which are student cases. There have been 1,133 school-related cases reported in the last 14 days, and 3,870 school-related cases reported to date. There are three Ontario schools closed because of COVID-19, and 676 schools currently have one or more reported cases.
There are currently 13,004 active, lab-confirmed cases in the province, which is up from 12,918 reported yesterday. Of those cases, 507 people are hospitalized (up from 484 yesterday) and 156 COVID patients are being treated in intensive care units. There are 92 COVID patients on ventilators (up from 89 yesterday).
Provincial public health labs have processed 37,471 COVID-19 tests, which produced a 4.6 per cent positivity rate.
To date, Public Health Ontario has confirmed 105,501 cases of COVID-19 and reported 88,992 recoveries and 3,505 deaths.
The cumulative average incidence rate for COVID-19 in Ontario is 709.8 cases per 100,000 people. The weekly incidence rate from Nov. 13 to 19 was 64.2 cases per 100,000 people.
The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit has reported a total of 1,837 cases of COVID-19, with 1,747 of those in Simcoe County. There are 1,553 cases listed as recovered in the region. Fourteen people are currently hospitalized, all are Simcoe County residents. The health unit has confirmed 52 deaths since March.
The incidence rate for Simcoe County is 331 cases per 100,000 people.
The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit enters the province's orange restrictions tomorrow.
