Two new COVID cases in Simcoe County today

The region's health unit is reporting two new cases of COVID-19 and a new long-term care outbreak today. 

The outbreak is at Georgian Residences retirement home in Penetanguishene. According to the Ministry of Long-Term Care, a COVID-19 outbreak must be declared if there is one positive test result in a resident or a member of staff. 

There are two cases linked to the outbreak at the Penetanguishene retirement home. One reported yesterday – a woman over the age of 80  – is a resident at the facility. One reported today, a woman between 18 and 34 years old from Severn, is also linked to the outbreak.

The second case reported today is a man between 18 and 34 years old from Midland. His case is community-acquired.

The regional health unit has reported 35 new cases of COVID-19 in Simcoe County in the last ten days (July 14-24). Nearly half of the cases (16 cases) reported in the last ten days have been from Barrie.

Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit has reported 647 lab-confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the region to date, with 616 of those reported in Simcoe County. 

Thirty-six people have died in Simcoe County and Muskoka and the health unit has reported 573 recoveries. The incidence rate for Simcoe-Muskoka region is 108.5 cases per 100,000 people in the population. 

There are 37 active cases of COVID-19 in Simcoe County including four people hospitalized, according to the health unit's July 24 epidemiological report. There is one active, hospitalized case in Muskoka District.
