Collingwood-based adult swimming athletes dove into national competition waters recently to win 84 individual medals, a team 4th place, and sixth overall in the Swimming Canada Masters National Championships.

Georgian Bay Squall members travelled to the Windsor International Aquatic and Training Centre at the end of May where they competed for the first time as a team, finishing fourth in the team competition and sixth overall out of 58 teams.

Individual athletes won 36 bronze, 27 silver and 21 gold medals plus 16 relay medals (seven bronze, seven silver and two gold).

The team is preparing now to swim and host Collingwood's only sanctioned open water swim on July 7, then they'll be off to Gravenhurst on July 13 and 14 for the Swim Ontario Open Water Championships.

The Squall Masters' head coach, Nancy Black, earned hardware of her own this year as the recipient of the Swimming Canada Masters Excellence in Coaching Award.

Presented annually, the award recognizes exceptional coaching by people who devote time, energy and enthusiasm to challenge and support their swimmers.

Black co-founded the Squalls club with Mark Beaton in 2021, and has been coaching adults for more than 25 years. She received the Swim Ontario Masters Coach of the Year award in 2023 and the Masters Swimming Canada Coach of the Year award in 2010.
