This month, to mark Black History Month, the Simcoe County Museum is hosting a virtual lecture series with one of the talks led by Collingwood residents Carolynn and Sylvia Wilson.

The Wilson sisters are co-owners of the Sheffield Park Black History and Cultural Museum, started by their family. They will be speaking about the museum and their work to recognize and tell stories of Black history in Grey and Simcoe Counties.

Both Sylvia and Carolynn are recipients of the Order of Collingwood and Companion to the Order of Collingwood for their volunteer work as community builders. They've also both been named among the 100 Accomplished Black Canadian Women Award.

They will be speaking at the virtual lecture series on Monday, Feb. 7 from 1-2 p.m.

You can join the lecture online here:museum.simcoe.ca

On Feb. 15, Dr. Rita Shelton Deverell will give a talk entitled "Several Sides of the Story" where she explores the idea of thriving even in the face of different stories about Black history and history in general.

Deverell, an Oro-Medonte resident has received numerous awards, including two Geminis, the Black Women’s Civic Engagement Network Leadership Award, and was appointed to the Order of Canada in 2005 for pioneering work in broadcasting.

Deverell's lecture will be online between 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. at the museum website: museum.simcoe.ca
