It’s never too late to take up a new sport, or improve your skills in an existing one.
A new adult master swimming program is coming to Collingwood, slated to dive in starting Nov. 2. Coach Nancy Black and her partner Mark Beaton will be running the program, and are looking for adult swimmers who want to swim for fitness reasons, or who want to improve their skills so they can compete.
“During COVID-19, it’s been hard to get something going,” said Black. “Adult fitness programs are important to have in a community. It’s been so rewarding to connect with people. I’m a pretty tough coach so when they say they want to swim hard, I can do that. I’m an invested coach in my swimmers’ performance.”
“I can’t wait to do this,” said Black.
The Collingwood Masters Swimming practices will be held on Tuesday and Thursday mornings and Wednesday evenings at Centennial Aquatic Centre in Collingwood, with hopes to expand the program based on need.
Training sessions will be designed for fitness swimmers, triathletes, and those looking to swim at competitions.
Black is a former Masters Swimming Canada Coach of the Year, and has coached adults for more than 25 years. A former competitive swimmer herself, Black competed in the 1976 and 1980 Olympic trials.
Beaton is an owner of BIOS Medical, and will be bringing a medical lens to the development of the program.
“Collingwood is a very active community, but it hasn’t had a consistent, high-quality masters swimming program. I intend to change that,” said Beaton. “My personal experience with masters swimming has been very rewarding. Having been to world championships in different parts of the world, I know it is a very social and inclusive sport for swimmers of all ages and abilities. Masters swimming is a life-long activity that is second-to-none in terms of its overall health and fitness benefits.”
