Eight people died on Ontario roads and trails and thousands of charges were laid during the Civic Holiday long weekend.
Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officers responded to six fatalities on roads, as well as two deaths related to off-road vehicles, “during what the OPP had hoped would be a safe Civic (Holiday) long weekend for everyone,” police said in a news release.
Police laid 8,050 charges between Aug. 2 and 5. Among the charges were the following:
- Speeding: 4,040
- Racing/stunt driving: 125
- Impaired driving: 235
- Distracted driving: 69
- No seatbelt: 554
- Move Over Law: 99
