NEWS RELEASE
HURONIA WEST OPP
*************************
Members from the Huronia West Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have responded to an increase in collisions involving deer during the month of September. The majority of the collisions have occurred between dusk and dawn which is the time of day they are most active searching for food.
Officers have responded to 62 motor vehicle collisions since January 1, 2021 to date. This includes eight in the month of September.
The OPP is reminding motorists to take the following precautions in order to reduce their risk of becoming involved in a collision with wildlife:
- Scan the road ahead from shoulder to shoulder. Deer are particularly active during dawn and dusk. Deer rarely travel alone, so when motorists see one there are likely more nearby.
- Watch your speed and be careful when driving at night. Slowing down will give you more time to react.
- Try not to direct your full attention to the animal when you take measures to avoid hitting it. Instead, focus your attention on the alternative route you decide to take, again only if this manoeuvre doesn't place you and others in danger.
- Use high beams at night where possible and watch for glowing eyes of animals.
- Never swerve suddenly. This could cause your vehicle to go out of control or head into oncoming traffic.
- Brake firmly but maintain control of your vehicle if you see an animal is standing on, or crossing the roadway. Never assume the animal will move out of your way.
The Huronia West OPP would like to remind motorists that there are wild animals that roam and often cross our roadways while on their journey's. Please keep this in mind, and be vigilant while driving in order to avoid collisions.
