LETTER: Culbert House raises questions about charity, town spending

'This, once again, makes me question where all the donations and funding to some charities end up and how the town’s tax money is spent,' letter writer says

Legally known as the Culbert House, part of the late Gloria Culbert's estate, this home at 167 Third Street has been deteriorating since her death in 2019 as court proceedings dragged on. The home was left to the Town of Collingwood, Home Horizon, and Habitat for Humanity with the idea it could benefit the unhoused in Collingwood.

CollingwoodToday received the following letter from reader Corinne Gilbert in response to our story titled For sale soon: 3rd St. home with several tenants, frequent police visits.

The article on “Culbert House” leaves me feeling nothing short of sad. There are few attainable/affordable homes for people, and now a very generous person wants to help out the homeless situation, and no one but the lawyer and real estate agent will profit from it.

That the Town of Collingwood and these two charities could not work something out together to keep the home in good stead while this matter was figured out is baffling to me.

This, once again, makes me question where all the donations and funding to some charities end up and how the town’s tax money is spent.

I am sure there is so much more to this story, but as printed...disappointing.

What an amazing gift, and now Gloria Culbert’s wishes for this will probably not be realized.

I truly hope I am proven wrong.
