Please include your full name, daytime phone number and address (for verification of authorship, not publication). The following letter is in response to an article about the province planning to suspend drivers’ licences for people convicted of vehicle theft, published May 15.

The theft of a car is not a random misdemeanour or a single bad judgment by a good person. Car thieves are trained, groomed and manipulated through organized crime.

Taking away the driver’s licence of a convicted criminal does not come anywhere near adequate as a consequence. I hope this is a supplement to more severe consequences including incarceration and fines.

Car theft is becoming life threatening and, in many cases, induces trauma in its victims. Let’s make sure that the convicted are not let off lightly.
