Police arrest man believed responsible for numerous shoplifting incidents

Officers of the Collingwood and The Blue Mountains detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) arrested a male recently in relation to a shoplifting investigation from earlier in 2019.

On May 17, 2019 officers were dispatched to a business on Balsam Street in Collingwood in regards to a male that was observed in the store and (is alleged) to have been involved in a shoplifting incident which had taken place in March 2019.

The male was seen leaving the store in a minivan prior to police arrival, however officers on patrols located and stopped the vehicle on Second Street.

The investigation led to the arrest of the male driver and it was discovered that the accused was (allegedly) involved in several shoplifting incidents in Owen Sound, Orangeville, Vaughan, Aurora as well as Collingwood.

Officers also seized various articles located in the minivan, including electrical fixtures, hand tools, power tools and small kitchen appliances that all appeared to be in their original packaging.

Charged is 42-year-old Hong Thanh Doan of Maple. He is charged with three counts of theft under $5,000, one count of theft under $5,000, and possession of property obtained by crime Under $5,000.

He was held for a bail hearing at the Ontario Court of Justice in Barrie on May 18, 2019.
