Grey Highlands will be applying to a provincial fund for significant upgrades to the Flesherton Arena.

At its meeting on Sept. 18, council approved a staff report that recommended making an application to the province’s Community Sport and Recreation Infrastructure Fund for repair work needed at the arena in Flesherton.

At the recent Association of Municipalities of Ontario conference, Premier Doug Ford announced the infrastructure fund will consist of two streams. One stream is for the construction of new facilities and the other is for repair and rehabilitation of existing structures. Through the grant program, provincial funding would cover 50 per cent of project costs.

“Among the sport facilities considered, the Flesherton and District Arena has been identified as the most suitable candidate for this funding opportunity. We recommend submitting a proposal for a project outline totalling $600,000,” Bobbi Scully, municipal services assistant, said in her report to council.

Grey Highlands would be responsible for $300,000 of the total amount of the project. Staff said they would include the municipality’s share in the 2025 budget process and would provide council with options to fund that amount.

The report noted that Flesherton arena needs major upgrade work in the next couple of years. This work includes improvements to the refrigeration equipment, sanitary waste piping upgrades, epoxy floor coating, domestic water distribution and fire suppression system among some of the items.

Council accepted the report unanimously with no comments.
