The Blue Mountains council will support the efforts of the Marsh Street Centre in Clarksburg to secure a federal grant for its Seniors Wellness Program.

At its meeting on Sept. 9, council unanimously agreed to have Mayor Andrea Matrosovs provide a letter of support to the Marsh Street Centre as it works to secure a federal grant through the New Horizons Seniors Grant program.

Marsh Street Centre representatives Michele Myrah and Erna Scholz attended the meeting to request council’s support.

The grant, if received, will be used to fund the Seniors Wellness Program from April 2025 to March 2026.

The Marsh Street Centre began the program in 2021 just after COVID-19 lockdowns were ending as a way to engage seniors. The program runs every Monday, except on holidays, for about two and a half hours and features exercise, a light lunch and a speaker on health-related and other topics.

Myrah said the program has continued to grow and saw more than 40 people attend a few weeks ago.

“It has become very, very successful,” she said.

The program costs approximately $2,000 per month to operate and the federal grant is expected to cover the full cost of the program for the year.

Council unanimously approved a resolution to have Mayor Matrosovs send the Marsh Street Centre a letter of support to be attached to their grant application to the program.
